Architectural Storytelling
Build a clear story around a migration or design, then practise adapting it for a whiteboard, stakeholder demo and executive summary.
Who this example is for
Cloud and DevOps engineers, architects and technical leads who explain designs to technical and non-technical colleagues.
Example starting level: B1–C1
Adapted after your assessment
Coaching is available at CEFR A2–C1. This is an illustrative plan, not a placement requirement or a promise of a level increase. We adjust the language, tasks and pace to your starting point and priorities.
What you will practise
- Explain a current system and the reason for a change.
- Compare design options and make trade-offs clear.
- Give a focused demo and respond to questions.
- Summarise a recommendation for a non-technical audience.
Each session combines a workplace task, focused language practice, rehearsal and feedback. Short between-session tasks help you revisit the language. Use fictional or anonymised material, never confidential company information.
Your example 12-week plan
01–12- Week 01
Your architecture story
Give a short explanation of a familiar system. Identify your audience, their questions and the decision they need to make.
- Week 02
Mapping the current state
Describe components, data flow and constraints using a simple diagram and clear signposting.
- Week 03
Why migrate?
Explain the reasons for an on-prem to Azure migration. Distinguish the business need from the technical solution.
- Week 04
First whiteboard walkthrough
Walk through a system architecture diagram showing the current and proposed design. Ask your listener to summarise it to check what was understood.
- Week 05
Options and trade-offs
Compare two approaches using language for cost, reliability, security and operational complexity.
- Week 06
Risk and uncertainty
Explain assumptions, dependencies and rollback plans. Practise conditional language without promising certainty.
- Week 07
Stakeholder demos
Plan a demo around a user need. Describe what is happening and prepare language for an unexpected failure.
- Week 08
Questions and objections
Rehearse clarification requests and difficult questions. Acknowledge concerns and return to the evidence.
- Week 09
Executive summaries
Turn your technical explanation into a short recommendation covering the need, options, risks and requested decision.
- Week 10
Different audiences
Explain the same design to an engineer and a non-technical stakeholder, adjusting detail and defining unfamiliar terms.
- Week 11
Proposal rehearsal
Deliver your migration proposal and demo. Refine pacing, signposting and answers after feedback.
- Week 12
Final design presentation
Present a whiteboard walkthrough and executive summary, then handle questions. Compare them with your starting explanation.
How we review progress
A recorded architecture walkthrough, a stakeholder demo outline and an executive summary, reviewed for structure, audience fit and clear trade-offs.
We compare starting samples, mid-point work and final tasks against goals agreed in your assessment. The focus is clearer communication with international colleagues, not accent imitation or a guaranteed CEFR change.
Start with your own priorities.
Book a free, approximately 30-minute spoken assessment about your work. No test or preparation; camera optional. Coaching is £60 per session and you choose how many sessions you need — 12 is only an example. There is no obligation to continue. See pricing and payment details.
