Agile Communication
Practise daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives and the written updates that keep a distributed team moving.
Who this example is for
Software engineers, DevOps professionals and team members working in Scrum or distributed teams.
Example starting level: A2–B2
Adapted after your assessment
Coaching is available at CEFR A2–C1. This is an illustrative plan, not a placement requirement or a promise of a level increase. We adjust the language, tasks and pace to your starting point and priorities.
What you will practise
- Give a concise update and explain a blocker.
- Clarify scope, estimates and dependencies in planning.
- Discuss incidents without blame and agree next actions.
- Write Slack or Teams updates that colleagues can act on.
Each session combines a workplace task, focused language practice, rehearsal and feedback. Short between-session tasks help you revisit the language. Use fictional or anonymised material, never confidential company information.
Your example 12-week plan
01–12- Week 01
Your role and team
Record a short introduction to your role and stack. Identify the meetings and messages you need English for.
- Week 02
Daily stand-ups
Rehearse yesterday, today and blockers. Practise sequencing, useful time expressions and a clear closing sentence.
- Week 03
Explaining blockers
Describe a failed pipeline or missing dependency. Ask for help and check that the listener understands.
- Week 04
Stand-up rehearsal
Run a simulated stand-up with follow-up questions. Compare it with your first recording and choose a focus for the next phase.
- Week 05
Sprint planning
Explain a user story, its acceptance criteria and the questions you need answered before starting.
- Week 06
Estimates and dependencies
Discuss uncertainty, negotiate scope and disagree politely about an estimate without overstating certainty.
- Week 07
Async updates
Write a Slack or Teams update with context, progress and a clear request. Revise it after feedback.
- Week 08
Handover practice
Prepare a written handover for another time zone and answer clarification questions in a short call.
- Week 09
Retrospectives
Describe what helped and what caused friction. Use neutral language and suggest one practical improvement.
- Week 10
Incidents and follow-up
Summarise an incident timeline without blame. Separate facts from assumptions and agree owners for actions.
- Week 11
Facilitating discussion
Open a meeting, invite quieter colleagues to contribute and summarise decisions in plain English.
- Week 12
Final team simulation
Rehearse a stand-up, planning discussion and retrospective. Review your recordings and written updates against your starting samples.
How we review progress
A stand-up recording, an async handover and retrospective actions, reviewed for clarity, useful detail and successful clarification.
We compare starting samples, mid-point work and final tasks against goals agreed in your assessment. The focus is clearer communication with international colleagues, not accent imitation or a guaranteed CEFR change.
Start with your own priorities.
